Background Information
The Beginning: A private bank was formed by Henry Hewitt, John R. Kimberly and Robert Shiells in 1861 on the ground floor corner of the Pettibone Block.
Changes to the Building ~ A fire broke out in January 1883, destroying the building. The Bank opened the following day in space made available by the Kimberly-Clark Corporation. A new building was constructed after the fire. ~ Construction on a new building began in 1919. As the new building was under construction, the bank rented a business space in the Old Russell House. ~ In the late 1940's, and into the early 1950's, the building was remodeled to include an Auto Window and Service Center. ~In 1963, the First National Bank of Neenah was demolished, replaced by a new three story building with an auto bank in 1964. ~In 2011, the building underwent major renovations. Relationship to Neighborhood and Community: The Bank has formed a strong connection within the local community. As railroads were established in the area, the Bank's influence on the local economy grew, strengthening the Bank's position and assister their customers growth. Today, the Bank is still very active within the community, sponsoring many local events and activities. Some examples are A Very Neenah Christmas, outdoor concerts, and other community events. |
General Timeline1861: A private bank in Neenah was founded.
1865: Henry Hewitt Sr. became the National Bank of Neenah's first official President and served for twenty-two years. This occurred when the bank changed from a private bank to a national bank charter. 1905: Name changed to First National Bank of Neenah. 1914: The Bank became part of the newly established Federal Reserve System. 1933: On March 4, the bank was closed for two weeks with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal Plan. 1952: Nearby buildings were remodeled to add an Auto Window and Service Center to the bank. (Location of installment and mortgage loan departments) 1970: Kellogg Citizens National Bank of Green Bay, Manitowoc Savings Bank, and First National Bank of Neenah merged to create Associated Bank. 2011: Renovation of the bank gave it a modernized look. 2014: Associated Bank joined the New York Stock Exchange under the name ASB. 2015: On February 24, ASB rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange, a rare opportunity for a local bank. |
